From The Pastors

Come Wander

When was the last time you visited the church Resource Center?  I wander in and out of that room regularly, sometimes because I need to wander, but often in search of a book.  We have an excellent church library, and a few very good books for sale.

Books are close friends.  They help you see into the mind and heart of other people, and help to stretch the size of the world by introducing new ideas to think about.

What are some of my favorite books in the library?  In the biography section I loved Franklin Graham's Rebel With a Cause.  My college history professor edited a book called More Than Conquerors which contains short biographies of many influential people.  For the sports fan we have Kurt Warner: And the Last Shall be First.  I think everyone should be familiar with the pioneer missionary to China.  We have J. Hudson Taylor: A Man in Christ by Roger Steer. Joni Earickson exposes many of here personal internal struggles in Choices/Changes.  Though not strictly a biography for the scientifically minded I recommend The Galileo Connection: Resolving Conflicts between Science and the Bible by Charles Hummel.

The book that I most often look for in the library is The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis.  Lewis is always very logical and, at the same time, very clear and understandable.  He explains that there are many kinds of pain in the world and that each kind of pain needs to be seen for what it is.  It is a book dealing with pain intellectually, not experientially.

That brings me to last book that I want to mention.  Sheila Walsh was a nationally known recording artist and television personality (co-host of the 700 Club with Pat Robertson) when she was stricken by depression and admitted to a Christian mental hospital.  I had heard bits of this story, but never the details, so I sat down and started to read the book.  It is an excellent book, looking at pain from the inside out.  She says that sometimes the pain that we experience is the result of not being honest and open with each other.  When we try to convince each other that we are doing just fine, our denial robs us of the power of healing within the body of Christ.  Often the pain of depression is a sign that we need to deal with other issues in our lives.  I highly recommend Honestly by Sheila Walsh.

Women's Retreat (September 24-26, 2010)

Every day we need to recharge and then there are times when a few more hours are needed. This retreat is about leaving your responsibilities for a weekend and "recharging" with a group of women. Come with a group of your friends or meet some new ones. What is important is the relationships you form are strengthened while you are at Pine Lake. God wants to communicate with us and give us what we need to live out our lives in a way that pleases Him, serves Him and all those we love and serve.

For more information click on the picture, there's a lot more about the retreat. Marge Mitchell is the contact for this event.

Men's Retreat (September 17-19, 2010)

It's designed to provide a variety of experiences to a wide range of men. Participating as you like in many recreational activities including trap shooting, golf, zip lines, canoeing and much more. The Saturday steak fry is an important part of Men's Retreat and it is always a highlight.

Lewis Update

We have been in the US for three weeks and in Omaha for one week. Omaha will be our home base this next year as we visit churches and friends to update them on the ministry.

Becca and John are slowly getting used to life here in the USA.  Becca took an exam and obtained her Learner's Permit today.  She has never driven a car nor used an automatic transmission since her limited experience has been driving our 4 WD Toyota pickup.  In late July she will attend a "Transition Seminar" for missionary kids returning to the US for college.  John is enjoying the food and conveniences of living here.  He mowed the grass yesterday, something he has not done the past four years.

Kolcyzk Update

Judy is getting a new right knee on Friday July 9th at 1:30 PM.  Please pray that all goes well with no infection, the least pain and quick recovery.  Pray that the right knee would turn out as well as the left one did.  That would be wonderful!

Food Bank Needs This Week

Current needs are listed each week....a way for you to Go & Share the love of Christ! Lists are also available at church for you to carry in your wallet. Please place your items in the box in the foyer or if needed, in the fridge or freezer in the kitchen labeled for food bank. In addition, the Christian Culture Center whom we work with on Wade Street in Towncrest is collecting used clothing in all sizes. Please put your donations in the food pantry box in the foyer or take directly there.
